No matter you trust others or let others trust you, the basic quality you should take is “trust”. None would like to make friend with those who always tell liars, that is to say, leave a terrible impression. A good social relationship should composed of so many parts, of which, trust is the most important one.
Mutually trust can help you to gain a great friend, which in turn, it help you build a good reputation. If a person thinks that you are unbelievable, then you should first prove that you worth trusting.
We all know the story of the wolf is coming. Once you tell liars two or three times, you would lose the chance of rescuing yourself. This advice is also adaptable to the social-men, that is, who already got a job.
What I want to say is : life is nothing but only a day. Live everyday truly.

Since the reform and open, we absorbed a lot of things from the western country. We know every coin have two sides, so it is. Someone think that the western culture irrigates the development of our country, but the other thinks that we lost much than what we got. But as far as I concerned, the advantage is more obvious.
Looking around us, what do we find to be the real influence of Western culture upon Chinese society?
First of all, the status of women in the society changes. For example, traditional Chinese people think men and women are not equal which is influenced by Confusion. Women’s job is just taking care of babies or doing the housework. However, the Western culture tells us we should give men and women the equal right. More and more talented women use their own ability to improve them—they can do what man can do. So we should thank those people who fight for the women’s right in the early western counties.
Secondly, lots of new science and technologies are introduced into our country, which indirectly improve our living condition and the quality of the society in recent years. We can see the lifestyle becomes different. It means our life become more
colorful.At this aspect, it should be extremely necessary to put it into the spotlight, for
it is the major achievement the western culture made. We no longer only wear Zhongshan fu, in stead; we have more new modern clothes, different color, different styles. We begin to know how the westerners celebrate their own festivals. So these are all very new and fresh for us, which we are more likely to imitate. The Valentine’s Day enrich the life of lovers, and it is really so romantic. The Christmas let you experience the different custom. People become open, they want to take those new and interesting and exciting things which they haven’t tried before.
Thirdly, language, like cultures, is influenced by the western culture. The necessities of intercourse bring the speakers of one language into direct or indirect contact with those of neighboring or culturally dominant languages. We borrowed a lot of new words from western countries, such as sofa(沙发), Coca-Cola （可乐）, coffee（咖啡）,www(万微网)，GDP(国内生产总值), cool(酷). All of these words make our life more convenient and interesting.
Fourthly, some good elements of Western culture do affect Chinese society. For example, in modern western society, the lives of most old and disabled people are secured by perfect social insurance system so the prevalence of individualism has few problems here. We learned from them to establish the social insurance system, and accomplished it step by step, so more and more disadvantaged people’s life are insured in Chinese society.
Finally, as we have proved, Chinese traditional culture is enriched by Western culture. What we should do now is how to benefit from the influence, at the same time we can make our Chinese culture brighter. One famous figure in Western culture, Jesus, asked “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Our answer is we will gain the whole world without losing its own culture.
When you are young your standards are set very high, however, as you age, you will have to lower your standards a bit and a bit and a bit…I came across this joke today. It's absolutely hilarious yet brutally true.

To see if the woman was sincere about saving her husband， the priest made fun of her. He even bid the woman to eat what he had vomited. To save her husband， she endured everything. The priest laughed before he left. Back home， suddenly she felt like vomiting. Something from her mouth dropped into her husband's cut chest. Slowly， her husband regained his life.

太原王生，早晨出门遇见一位年轻漂亮的女子，便把她带回家，藏在书房。女子告诉他，对谁也不要说这件事。一天，王生外出碰见一老道，老道见王忙问：“你最近遇到什么了？” 王生撒谎说：“什么也没遇见。”老道说：“你身上一股妖气，你的血快被妖精吸干了。”王生回到家里，隔窗往书房内看去，只见一狰狞厉鬼，正用一支彩笔画人皮，听到人的声音后，又忙把人皮往身上一披，立刻变作一位美丽的少女，王生吓得魂飞魄散，拔腿就跑。厉鬼赶上，拉住王生，挖出了他的心。王生妻子陈氏，亲眼看到丈夫被害，悲痛欲绝，她急忙找到道士，跪地哀求道士救她丈夫。老道为考验陈氏救夫的决心，百般戏弄陈氏，并从口中吐出东西让陈氏吃。陈氏一心想救丈夫，什么都忍受了，道士见状哈哈大笑而去。陈氏一到家里，抚着丈夫的尸体大哭，在抱尸收敛时，她突然呕吐，所食东西一下子从口中飞出，落入丈夫腔中，丈夫慢慢地苏醒过来。

伦敦大学教授英译《红楼梦》。《红楼梦》是中国的旷世巨著，大陆、香港、台湾都曾改编拍成电影，家喻户晓。50年代大陆拍摄的《红楼梦》在香港创下了连映二百多天的纪录，至今仍未有一部电影可以打破该纪录。
五四运动后不少白话文作家都歌颂过《红楼梦》这部伟大的小说。红学专家，风起云涌，人才辈出；红学佳作，淙淙汩汩，源源不绝。
五六十年代多位中外学者就曾经把《红楼梦》英译，介绍到西方国家去，但由于种种问题，都只是节译而已。
直至70年代有一位牛津大学的讲座教授霍克思(David Hawks)，竟然不惜辞去职务，专心埋首于全部《红楼梦》的英译。他的译笔功力深邃，英文写得非常流畅。

"My one abiding principle has been to translate everything-even puns. For although this is ,in the sense I have already indicated, an 'unfinished' novel, it was written (and written) by a great artist with his very life blood. I have therefore assumed that whatever I find in it is there for a purpose and must be dealt with somehow or other, I cannot pretend always to have done so successfully, but if I can convey to the reader even a fraction of the pleasure this Chinese novel given me , I shall not have lived in vain."
中国曹雪芹 英国霍克思

经典名著对白 地道英语译法
霍克思是一位汉学家，精通中国古典文学，译过《离骚》、杜甫诗，通晓宋词、元典。他盛年时已出任牛津大学中国文学讲座教授，但他竟然薄此而不为，花了十多个寒暑闭户埋首英译《红楼梦》。
霍克思把书名译为The Story of the Stone,摒弃了一直沿用的The Dream of the Red Chamber, 是因为手抄本一向用《石头记》为书名。
我们现在来欣赏霍克思翻译的贾宝玉与袭人的一段对话：
“宝玉听了这话，见她脸上气色非往日可比，便笑道：‘怎么又动了气呢？’袭人冷笑道：‘我那里敢动气呢？只是你从今别进这屋子了。横竖有人服待你，再不必支使我，我仍旧服侍老太太去。’”
"The expression on her face as she uttered these words was angrier than he had ever seen her look before. “He laughed. "'Oh dear! Are you in a rage again?" "Aroma laughed mirthlessly. "'It's not for the likes of me to get into rages, But I wish that from now on you would stop coming into this room, After all, you have got people to wait on you elsewhere . You don't really need my services. I shall back to serving Her Old Ladyship, like I used before.'"(转)
一、Roman Holiday。
通常译为《罗马假日》，给人造成的印象是浪漫的意大利之旅。
可是英语中的Roman Holiday出典于罗马帝国时代的角斗士表演，因而据American Heritage Dictionary，其意思实际上是：
1. Enjoyment or satisfaction derived from observing the suffering of others.
2. A violent public spectacle or disturbance in which shame, degradation, or physical harm is intentionally inflicted on one person or group by another.
看过影片的人自当对这层含义有所了解。
二、Hobson's Choice。
被译成《霍布逊的选择》。电影中主角名叫Hoboson，表面上看也没有问题。
可是大概的情节是，这位Hobson先生是一位鞋店老板，不愿意把大女儿嫁给店里的伙计，结果遭到三个女儿同盟的反对，于是屈从了她们。
在英语中Hobson's Choice也是一个成语，同样据American Heritage Dictionary，它的意思是：An apparently free choice that offers no real alternative.
出典大约是这样：After Thomas Hobson (1544?-1630), English keeper of a livery stable, from his requirement that customers take either the horse nearest the stable door or none。
电影巧用这个名字（莫如说将主角命名为Hobson），正为了套这个典故。而译名恰好颠倒了意思。
三、White Nights。
改编于托斯妥耶夫斯基的同名小说，照字面意思，无论小说或电影都译成了《白夜》。但要知道，这个词组，根据它的法文词源，意思是：A night without sleep. 翻译过来应为《不眠之夜》。电影中男女主人公总是在晚上谈情说爱，最后一晚是个雪夜，这样英文原名实有双关之意。可由于主要的场景不是发生在雪夜，译作白夜似乎太牵强了。
四、Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?
据说香港有报纸译为《谁怕又贞又淫的女人》，台湾某报则译作《谁怕维吉尼亚州的狼》！如果不是在煽情的话，这简直是在卖弄无知了。Virginia Woolf是英国著名的意识流小说家，后来自杀身亡。而这部影片则套用了一曲童谣，名为"Who's afraid of the big, bad wolf?"港台的报纸想象力太过丰富了！
五、Pumpkin Eater。
也许有人会译成《食南瓜的人》吧。
其实这也是来源于一首广为流传的童谣："Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater, had a wife and couldn't keep her." 根据故事情节，译做《太太的苦闷》似乎比较恰当。
六、Brave New World。
Aldous Huxley（英国作家，Thomas Huxley之孙）的一本科幻小说名。
早期有人译作《勇敢的新世界》，现在恐怕很多人拿到原著，看到《美丽新世界》的题目，也要以为翻译错了。殊不知，这书题出自莎士比亚的《暴风雨》一剧，Miranda的话："How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in't!"这里brave一词取的是法语brave的意思，作“好”解。Huxley写此书是反讽20世纪的机器文明，称它为“大好”，其实不以为然。
